How to make natural yogurt {in a slow cooker}

I’m definitely a plain Jane when it comes to yogurt and much prefer the natural variety over flavored. I like its versatility, and eat it every day and often use it in cooking, I’ve got to say though at around $8/kg its been getting kind of expensive. 

In an effort to kerb the cost I have used EasiYo yogurt mixes in the past. These are a quick(ish) – just – add – water solution to making your own yogurt. If you like your yogurt flavored they have heaps of varieties to chose from, check out the EasiYo online through Aussie Health Products.

I’d heard though that it was easy to make your own yogurt by using just a bit of natural yogurt as the starter, and was keen to give it a crack.

I  had my first attempt, or rather had a couple of attempts making my own yogurt in the slow cooker just last week. I picked up the recipe at Inhabitat and to be honest, misread the directions not once but twice.  Third time was a charm! The third, and final result was amazing… amazing it saw me do a happy dance around the kitchen.

Now, this is a lengthy process so I wouldn’t start without planning your time. The post on Inhabitat  is much more detailed than the recipe I’ve added here, and if you’re more a visual, step-by-step kind of person I recommend you head over to their site to see it all in detail. 

This recipes makes a lot of yogurt 1.5-2kgs so you’ll need to pick up a nice big container to store it in, I’m thinking about buying a couple of the large Bell Mason jars from Biome – they look pretty funky don’t you think?

Making your own yogurt at home is easy using a slow cooker. Plan to start the process about 6 hours before you go to bed and it will be ready by morning.

  1. 2 litres whole milk
  2. 1/2 cup natural yogurt with live cultures
  1. Put milk in slow cooker and set to low for 2.5 hrs.
  2. Turn slow cooker off, keep lid on and allow to sit for 3 hrs.
  3. Stir through yogurt and wrap slow cooker in towel (with lid still on). You want to make a nice, warm and dark environment for the yogurt to cultivate.
  4. After 8-12 hours drain whey from yogurt using a cheesecloth lined strainer.
  1. I keep aside the whey and use in smoothies.
  2. Don't forget to keep 1/2 cup of this yogurt aside to use as the starter for your next batch.
